Vern Breland grew up in West Sterlington. He attended A. L. Smith and graduated from Sterlington High School in 1980. Vern received his degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2006 with a major in History and Spanish.
When I asked Vern if he always wanted to be Mayor of the Town of Sterlington, he picked up and rattled a jar on the front of his desk. “Those are my hips,” he said. Mayor Breland explained that he’d worked for the Monroe Police Department but had hip surgery and had to find something else to do. When Cliff Bullock told Vern that he did not intend to run again for the position of mayor in Sterlington, Vern decided to run himself.
What’s your favorite thing to do in Sterlington, I asked Vern. A great big smile broke out on his face. “Be mayor,” he said. Vern told me that he enjoyed everything about the Town of Sterlington and I could tell he meant it.
