Because I am broke, and have nothing to do.
I thought I’d write a song for you.
It may be a little boring, but hey. Better than nothing.
Just wanted to say I love you more than dinosaurs and babe,
thats a lot of love.
If I have just one cookie left, I’d give it to you.
Now thats real love [...]

Vern Breland

Vern Breland grew up in West Sterlington. He attended A. L. Smith and graduated from Sterlington High School in 1980. Vern received his degree from the University of Louisiana at Monroe in 2006 with a major in History and Spanish.

When I asked Vern if he always wanted to be Mayor of the Town of Sterlington, he picked up and rattled a jar on the front of his desk. “Those are my hips,” he said. Mayor Breland explained that he’d worked for the Monroe Police Department but had hip surgery and had to find something else to do.

It was only 9:20 am but the halls at Sterlington High School were eerily empty. There were no students be seen and none of the sounds you would expect on a regular school day. Tall men with weapons slid solemnly alongside the abandoned lockers, peering into doorways and moving quickly up stairwells. They communicated with looks and hand motions. The serious looks on their faces didn’t frighten me- but comforted me greatly.

Town of Sterlington: It’s a sign!

Jan 30th, 2010 | By julieashley

Looking for a “sign” that this is the best small town in Northeastern Louisiana?

Well, there used to be a billboard above the Mobile Mart that said, “Sterlington, You’ve made it Home!” This was a favorite sight of mine. The water tower with the words “Welcome to Panther Country” is nice, too. The small green marker that just says “Sterlington” was once featured in the banner for this website. All these signs are familiar and comforting to see when you arrive in the Town of Sterlington.
